Wandr Privacy Policy
Effective May 20, 2026 · Wandr is published by Red Hills Media, LLC.
Wandr is a map explorer for iPhone. As you move, the app reveals the map tiles you have passed through, so that over time you can see the shape of everywhere you have been. This page describes exactly what data Wandr handles and what it does not.
The short version
- Your map, places, and routes stay on your iPhone. Wandr has no accounts and no Wandr-operated servers.
- We do not sell your data, and we never see your location. Your location is never sent to us or to anyone else.
- The optional Friends leaderboard shares only a display name you choose plus your total tile and award counts — never your location, map, places, routes, or photos.
- No trackers, analytics, ads, or third-party SDKs.
- You can delete everything at any time by deleting the app; turning Friends off also removes the small record it stored in your iCloud.
What Wandr accesses, and why
- Location ("Always") — required so the map can reveal tiles as you move, including while the phone is in your pocket or the app is in the background. Without this, the core feature does not work. Location is processed on your device and is never transmitted to us.
- Background app refresh & Live Activities — used so tiles keep revealing when the app is not in the foreground. When you start a tracking session, Wandr shows a Live Activity on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island so iOS grants the higher background priority needed to keep tracking; you can stop the session at any time from that control. This stays on your device.
- Notifications (optional) — if you allow them, Wandr can send a local reminder when you arrive back at a place you saved. These notifications are generated on your device; their content is not sent anywhere.
- Photos (optional) — only used if you choose to add a photo to a saved place. Wandr reads your photo library on the device to find photos taken near that place around that time (using each photo's own location and timestamp) and lets you attach one. This happens entirely on your device; your photos and their metadata are not uploaded or sent anywhere. You may grant Limited access, and Wandr works fine if you decline.
- iCloud — Friends (optional, off by default) — only if you turn on the "Friends" feature in Settings. See the next section for exactly what is shared.
Friends & the leaderboard (optional, opt-in)
Friends is off by default and requires you to be signed in to iCloud. There is no Wandr account; the feature uses your existing iCloud (Apple's CloudKit) and a short, human-friendly friend code (for example K7M-P9R).
- When you enable Friends, Wandr publishes one small record to the app's shared iCloud database containing only: a display name you choose, your total number of explored tiles, and your total number of awards. It also stores a friend code that maps to that record.
- You connect with friends by exchanging friend codes — Wandr does not read your Contacts and does not look you up by phone, email, or name. Once you add a friend's code, Wandr fetches their display name and tile/award totals to build a simple leaderboard.
- Wandr never shares your location, your explored map, your saved places, your routes, or your photos through Friends — only the display name and the two counts above.
- Turning Friends off in Settings immediately deletes your published record and friend code from iCloud and clears your local friends list.
- This data is stored in Apple's iCloud/CloudKit and is governed by Apple's privacy policy. Red Hills Media operates no server of its own and cannot see your iCloud account.
Sharing
When you tap Share — for a saved place or a generated map image — Wandr creates an image and/or a wandr:// link and hands it to the standard iOS share sheet. What you share, and who you send it to, is entirely your choice. Wandr does not transmit anything on its own.
What Wandr stores, and where
The following information is stored only on your device, inside Wandr's local SwiftData database:
- The set of map tiles you have explored, including when each was first explored and last visited.
- Places you have manually saved (coordinates, your title and optional note, visit counts, and any photo you attach).
- Total distance traveled and tracking-session history (computed locally from location updates).
- Which achievements you have unlocked.
- If you use Friends: your chosen display name, your friend code, and a cached list of the friends you added (their display names and tile/award counts).
Aside from the small Friends record described above, none of this leaves your device. There is no Wandr account, no Wandr login, and no sync to a Wandr server.
What Wandr does not do
- No analytics or telemetry of any kind.
- No advertising, ad identifiers (IDFA), or attribution SDKs.
- No crash reporters or third-party SDKs.
- No access to your Contacts, microphone, camera, calendar, health, or HomeKit data. Photos, Notifications, and iCloud are used only if you opt into the corresponding optional features.
- No tracking across other apps or websites, as defined by Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework.
Third parties
Wandr relies on Apple services only:
- Apple Maps (MapKit) renders the map. When the map is on screen, MapKit makes the network requests required to fetch map tiles.
- Apple iCloud (CloudKit) stores the optional Friends record described above, and only if you enable Friends.
Both are subject to Apple's privacy policy. Wandr makes no other network requests and uses no other third parties.
Children
Wandr is rated 4+ and is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Your rights and choices
- You can revoke location access at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Wandr. The map will stop revealing new tiles, but your previously-explored data remains on the device.
- You can turn Friends off in the app at any time, which deletes your iCloud record and friend code. You can revoke Photos and Notifications access in iOS Settings.
- To delete everything Wandr has stored, delete the Wandr app from your iPhone. iOS removes the app's local storage at the same time. (If Friends was on, turn it off first, or delete your iCloud data via Settings › Apple Account › iCloud.)
Changes
If this policy materially changes, the new version will be published at this URL with an updated effective date.
